I made a dumb mistake this morning. I’ve felt a cold trying to come on, so I’ve been taking Elderberry and Vitamin C in the mornings to help fight it off. Today in a hurry I took them before I ate. After dropping the girls off at school, I went straight to the gym and ended up sitting in my car in the parking lot for almost 20 minutes waiting for my stomach to stop being queasy. In addition, I’m bloated and the warmth from the heater in the car made me sleepy. It occurred to me that I could go home and take a nap, then come back later in the afternoon, but I knew better. I wouldn’t come back if I did that – excuses would happen.
It put the subject of accountability on my mind. One of the main reasons I started this blog was to keep myself accountable to my goals. Knowing that I’m being transparent in every step pushes me over the hurdle in these moments where it’s easier to give up. So I got out of the car and walked in the gym, feeling aimless.
As I walked toward the locker room, I saw one of the employees helping a blind woman get started on the treadmill. Wow! That’s dedication. She had a valid reason to skip the gym if she wanted to. I didn’t. It was certainly a good reality check and inspired me to be enthusiastic about hopping on the treadmill myself.
The song recommendation for today is not the most uptempo track, but when I got on that treadmill it was the fire in my bones. Better Is One Day has such a driving rock beat and was the perfect tempo to jog at the 4.5mph setting. I got so lost in it that I ran the whole song length without a second thought (roughly 4 minutes). Better is one day in your courts than thousands elsewhere. Yes Lord.
When I finished my ten minutes plus cooldown, I had to run to the bathroom. It was funny, because my thigh muscles kept twitching – left, right, left, right – like I was still jogging. Apparently my body wasn’t ready to be done yet! Ok ok I hear you!
Since the overhead abdominal machine didn’t work out for me, I hit the Torso Rotation machine for 3 sets of 85 pounds. This was much more gentle on my arm and still does a great job of targeting the abs. Plus it’s just fun to twist like that! I also did another round of both Hip Abduction machines for 3 sets of 100.
I was looking around to see if there were any other machines I recalled using previously, and then I spotted it – The Superman. It’s actually the Glute machine, but I like my name for it better. It’s time to tone up this booty! It’s not like I hate my whole body. I’m fully aware that in the right jeans I have a nice butt! The good Lord gave me a full figure with womanly curves, and I’m cool with it. I just definitely need to trim the fat, tighten, tone, and strengthen the muscles – so I did 3 sets of 70 pounds for each leg. The way you lean forward on your chest, hold the handlebars in front, and push the weights by stretching your leg straight back, it reminds me of flying.
I moved on to the Chest Press and did 3 sets of 40 pounds. Then I told myself I better do the Shoulder Press again since it’s so weak for me. As I approached the machine, I caught myself about to swear at it under my breath! You son of a… machine making factory…
1 set at 25 pounds was rough. I wanted to walk away glad that I did at least one, but I sat there for a minute trying to talk myself into another set. I was looking all around me for motivation and just not finding it. I was about to get up and go, when all of a sudden the Lord dropped something into my spirit. He reminded me of the verse I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) and that he will make me victorious. Literally the second the word victory hit me, I grabbed the bars and instantly churned out a second set even easier than the first one. I didn’t even realize I was doing it until I was almost done. God is so good! I appreciate the little reminders I get that I am loved, supported, and doing something the Lord wants me to do. AMEN!
Before wrapping up, I headed over to do my planks. Yesterday I aimed for 62 seconds and hit 63.5, so today my goal was 65. I made it to 68.5! Wahoo! I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to start adding Russian Twists with the kettle balls soon. I’m kind of dreading it, but only because my balance is not great. It won’t get better without practice, though!
At this juncture, I was hot, sweaty, and messy hair, don’t care. To unwind, I decided to hit the tanning bed. I wouldn’t normally be into that kind of thing, but I am what you would call Casper levels of pale (when I’m not flush from working out). There is probably some Irish in my heritage somewhere or another. My skin burns badly and peels in the summer. I have learned that if I get a base tan in the beds, I avoid getting a really painful burn the first day the summer sun kisses my skin. Apparently 10 minutes was too much this time around, because I look like someone played pink belly with me for that 10 minutes. I mean, I’m red and the kind of itchy that hurts to give a satisfying scratch. I don’t think I’ll peel, but I am currently less than comfortable. Such is life. Soldier on!
